Maternity Care

East Alabama Medical Center offers a wide array of services, ranging from prenatal care to pediatrics. We welcome approximately 2,000 little miracles into the world each year. Our physicians and staff are here to provide care and services from the time you learn you are pregnant, through delivery, and beyond.

Our group of caring nurses, physicians, lactation consultants and other clinical staff are dedicated to providing high-quality, high-tech care with a personal touch. Many of the nurses in the EAMC Women’s and Children’s Center have worked here for years – they are experienced and passionate about their work and the patients they care for.

What does it mean to be Baby-Friendly?

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program that was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1991 to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding and mother/baby bonding.

This initiative follows evidence-based best practices for all moms and babies including encouraging skin-to-skin contact between moms and babies.

EAMC’s Baby-Friendly designation means that we have successfully implemented the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.

What should You Expect if You Deliver at East Alabama Health’s Baby-Friendly hospital?

Baby Friendly hospitals meet the gold standard for mother and baby care, especially related to breastfeeding. That means that after you deliver, your baby will stay close to you for bonding and to make breastfeeding easier. We allow you and your baby to stay together day and night so you can get to know each other. Being together gives you more opportunities to learn about normal baby behavior, and if you have questions about your baby or breastfeeding, our staff will be there for you.

Our nurses and lactation consultants will carefully assess your baby’s feeding so that any early problems can be taken care of quickly. They also will assist you in breastfeeding so that you feel more confident. After you and your baby are home, if breastfeeding worries arise, our lactation consultants are available by phone or in-person consultations to help you solve feeding problems.

East Alabama Health is proud to be designated as Baby-Friendly, and in 2015 was the second hospital in Alabama to earn this distinction. We continually invest in evidence-based programs that support infant bonding and safe feeding practices, so mom and baby get the best, healthiest and happiest start possible.
